Umbrella Body - CRBs Disclosure Service

Working with the Home Office Ciminal Records Bureau (CRB), ADSiS is an umbrella Body organisation providing organisations in England and Wales access to criminal records and other information, through a service called 'Disclosure’.  The purpose of this is to help organisations make informed decisions when recruiting.

What is a Disclosure?

A Disclosure is a document containing information held by the police and government departments.  It is provided by the Criminal Records Bureau through an Umbrella or Registered Body such as ADSiS.

The Disclosure is used by employers to make informed recruitment decisions.

The Disclosure service offers organisations a way of checking the background of job applicants to ensure that they do not have a history which would make them unsuitable for the posts they are trying to fill.

Disclosures provide information on a person’s background which may affect an application including convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer (PNC).  If the position involves working with children, Disclosures will also contain details from lists held by the Department of Health (DoH) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).  Depending on the level of Disclosure, this may also contain information held by local police forces.

Levels of Disclosures

The CRB offers two types of Disclosure.  These levels are Standard or Enhanced.  Each provides a different level of checks.

Standard Disclosures

Are primarily for posts that involve working with children or vulnerable adults.  They may also be issued for people entering legal and accountancy  professions.

Enhanced Disclosures

Are for posts involving a far greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults.  In general, the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people.

You might be asked to apply for a Standard or Enhanced Disclosure if your employees work:-

  • With children or vulnerable adults
  • In an establishment that is wholly or mainly for children
  • In Healthcare, or
  • Have applied to be a foster carer, adoptive parent or child minder

How will I know what level of Disclosure to apply for?

The organisation that has asked you to apply will decide the appropriate level of Disclosure for the position.  However, further guidance is available from the CRB web site www.crb.gov.uk

How do I apply for a Disclosure?

Applying for a disclosure could not be simpler!  All you need to do is contact ADSiS as a registered Umbrella Body and we will do the rest of the work for you.  We will verify your evidence of identity and process your completed application form in accordance with the CRB’s code of practice.

How will the applicant know what the CRB says?

Once the CRB Service have made their relevant checks, a copy of the completed Disclosure will be sent out to both the applicant and the employer/organisation requesting it.
