Alcohol

I think I may have a drink problem

At Adsis we believe that a drink problem is drinking too much, too often or at the wrong times.

Every individual is different so drinking will affect you differently. Factors such as your age, whether you are male or female, your current state of health or whether you are on prescribed medication and /or take illicit drugs are just some of the factors that can impact the way your body deals with alcohol.

Why do people drink?

Social reasons:

A drink can help you feel more confident and be able to talk to people

Emotional reasons:

Sometimes we drink to change the way we feel, to cheer us up or to help us cope with difficult times

Physical reasons:

Alcohol can help us relax and unwind

What problems can alcohol cause?

  • Physical and/or mental health problems
  • Disruption at work or in education
  • Financial difficulties
  • An increase in accidents or injuries
  • Anger or violence
  • Legal problems

There are lots of reasons and factors that lead to people drinking too much and the problems it can cause. This is a very individual thing and that is why at Adsis we tailor our information, advice and support to your specific needs.

If you think you may have a problem, contact us for further information and advice. See Contact Us for details of your nearest office. What can you do in the meantime?

  • Check your alcohol intake. Government guidelines suggest that safer drinking levels for a woman are 2-3 units of alcohol per day and 3-4 units per day for a man.
  • Keep a drink diary
  • If you are a regular drinker have one or two alcohol free days per week
  • If you are unsure what a unit of alcohol is go to FAQS
